Powering the NSW Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap

Enel X’s Virtual Power Plants are delivering flexible demand to support a reliable, renewable grid.

Delivering flexible demand for NSW’s energy transition

Enel X Australia is delivering virtual power plant (VPP) capacity under the NSW Government’s Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap, helping support a reliable, affordable and increasingly renewable electricity system.

As part of the Roadmap’s firming infrastructure program, Enel X has been awarded:

Together these projects use flexible demand from commercial and industrial businesses across Greater Sydney, the Central Coast, Newcastle and the Lower Hunter regions to support the grid during periods of peak demand and system stress.

The combined capacity of almost 130 MW awarded can help keep the lights on for around 40,000 homes during grid emergencies.

About the NSW Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap

The NSW Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap is the NSW Government’s long-term plan to deliver a clean, reliable and affordable energy system as coal-fired generation retires and more renewable energy enters the grid.

As part of the Roadmap, firming infrastructure helps ensure electricity is available when it is needed most, particularly during periods of high demand, low renewable generation or system stress.

Firming capacity can come from batteries, generation, and flexible demand.

Why virtual power plants matter

VPPs provide fast, flexible support by coordinating participating businesses to temporarily reduce or shift electricity use when the grid needs it most.

By using existing customer assets, VPPs can deliver scalable capacity without the need for costly new peaking infrastructure.

Benefits include:

  • supporting grid reliability
  • reducing pressure during peak demand
  • helping integrate renewable energy
  • avoiding costly infrastructure overbuild
  • creating new revenue opportunities for participating businesses

Enel X currently operates around 300 MW of flexible demand capacity across NSW through its VPP and demand response programs.
