Demand Response opportunities in WA

As the global and local leader in Demand Response, Enel X has unmatched access to energy market programs, which means more value for your flexible demand in the Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM) in WA. There are a range of programs designed to support the grid or local regions in different, but complementary ways. All programs enable you to generate revenue to offset your energy costs, whilst supporting grid reliability in peak times. In turn, this puts downward pressure on energy prices and supports the energy transition. We advise you on the programs that best match your goals and flexible demand capability.

Demand Response Programs

1. Emergency Demand Response Overview

WA’s rising energy demand, hotter summers, and ageing generators have increased the need for reserve capacity to maintain grid reliability.

By joining Enel X Emergency Demand Response programs., your organisation can earn revenue by being ready to reduce energy use during occasional grid emergencies, helping to prevent blackouts and support the energy transition.

2. Standby Revenue

Enel X helps you identify how much energy your site can safely reduce with minimal impact. You earn regular payments for keeping that capacity in reserve, whether it's used or not. In an emergency, you'll be called on to reduce demand by the agreed amount, supporting grid reliability.

3. Energy Payments

In addition to standby payments, you’re paid for any energy curtailed during an emergency, which is typically when electricity pricing is very high.

4. Sustainability and ESG Benefits

Reducing demand during grid emergencies helps to lower reliance on carbon-intensive generation, supporting grid decarbonisation and gives power back to those who need it most in the community. Your participation contributes to a cleaner, more stable energy system.

1. Program Overview

Avoid Capacity Charges

Capacity charges are based on your energy use during peak demand and can significantly impact your bill. By reducing consumption during the top 12 peak intervals, you can cut these costs.

Enel X helps predict and respond to these peaks - delivering significant savings for WA businesses.

2. Calculating Capacity Charges

Your capacity charges are based on your energy consumption in the top 3 peak demand trading intervals for each of the four top peak demand days in the previous year. Your average demand across these 12 intervals is then used to calculate your capacity charge for the following year.

3. Enel X Forecasts Peak Demand Days

Enel X uses advanced forecasting to predict peak demand intervals with high accuracy, giving you timely alerts to reduce energy use. Our approach maximises savings while minimising curtailment and operational impact.

4. Reduce Energy Consumption and Capacity Charges

Enel X provides daily forecast emails to help you prepare for potential peak demand days, along with real-time notifications that include curtailment start and end times. You can respond by powering down non-essential equipment or switching to backup generation or battery storage.

Our forecasting has accurately predicted all peak intervals in 9 of the last 10 years - maximising savings with minimal disruption.

Sustainability Benefits

Demand Response plays a vital role in Australia’s clean energy transition by helping maintain grid reliability as the country phases out ageing coal-fired power stations. By shifting or reducing electricity use during peak periods, it lowers dependence on costly, high-emission peaking plants. As renewable generation from wind and solar continues to grow, flexible demand becomes essential for balancing supply and demand. This approach enables smoother integration of clean energy, reduces the need for fossil-fuel infrastructure, and helps cut overall emissions.
