The WA Government's recent Future Energy System Outlook (FESO) released in July 2026 and the updated South West Interconnected System Transmission Plan provide the clearest indication yet of the scale of change facing Western Australia's electricity system.
Together, these documents identify strong growth in electricity demand driven by critical minerals processing, industrial electrification, population growth and economic diversification.
Meeting this demand will require substantial investment across generation, storage and transmission infrastructure while maintaining a secure and reliable power system.
However, supply-side investment is only part of the equation. As the SWIS evolves, demand-side flexibility is becoming an increasingly important tool for maintaining reliable system operation.
Flexible demand refers to the ability of energy users to temporarily reduce, shift or manage electricity consumption during periods when the system is under stress. Rather than building additional generation to meet every period of peak demand, flexible loads can help balance supply and demand in real time.
