Benefits of power flexibility

Receive payments for reducing grid consumption by either switching to backup generation or making temporary adjustments to equipment.

The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) works constantly to balance the electricity grid. When the frequency drops below 50 Hz, AEMO calls upon Enel X's portfolio of customers to reduce their energy usage.

With more renewables and less coal-fired power stations, the grid needs an instantaneous response to manage unforeseen events and provide grid balancing services. Quickly reducing your grid consumption when called on is an effective solution. 

When pricing is high our customers use power flexibility to offer energy into the market. This puts downwards pressure on wholesale electricity pricing for all consumers.

How a power flexibility event occurs

Power flexibility is triggered either by a grid need (when there’s not enough supply to meet demand) or a price signal (for example, when the price per MWh jumps above $300).

That trigger is then activated by automated controls or manually by our network operations centre. Flexible businesses can choose to either:

  1. Make temporary adjustments to equipment electricity usage, like pumps, chillers or compressors
  2. Switch energy use from the grid to on-site power sources, like back-up generators or battery storage 

Once the grid need or price signal has passed, businesses return to normal power consumption.

Enel X flexibility programs

Flexibility is required at times when wholesale spot prices are high 

Action: Backup generator turns on within 10 minutes of notification 

Event duration: 30 minutes – 4 hours

Event frequency: 10 – 15 hours per year

Flexibility is required in response to brief, unexpected imbalances in grid supply and demand

Action: Adjust equipment electricity usage or turn on backup generator within 60 seconds of notification

Event duration: 4 – 10 minutes

Event frequency: 6 - 20 events per year

Flexibility is required when grid stability is under threat within a distinct location, deferring expensive network upgrades

Action: Adjust equipment electricity usage or turn on backup generator within unique network parameters

Event duration and frequency: Unique to geographic location

Flexibility is required during emergencies that threaten grid stability

Action: Adjust equipment electricity usage or turn on backup generator within 60 minutes of notification

Event duration: 1 – 4 hours

Event frequency: 0 – 10 events per year

Flexibility is required when electricity demand charges are calculated

Action: Turn on backup generator within 1 minute of notification

Event duration: 30 minutes – 2 hours

Event frequency: 10 – 20 events per year

Flexibility is required when system maximum demand is calculated

Action: Adjust equipment electricity usage or turn on backup generator within 60 minutes of notification

Event duration: 2.5 hours

Event frequency: 6 – 10 times per year
