Taipei, July 29, 2026 – As global supply chains place increasing emphasis on low-carbon manufacturing and green procurement, achieving net zero has become an important factor in maintaining competitiveness. The biopharmaceutical industry is among the world’s higher-emitting sectors1, and manufacturers face growing pressure to decarbonize while meeting strict GMP standards and maintaining highly stable power supply for precision operations. In this high energy consumption and high-precision environment, balancing operational reliability, carbon reduction and cost efficiency have become a key industry challenge.
Enel X Taiwan, a leading commercial and industrial Demand Response Virtual Power Plant (VPP) provider and holder of a “Specific Electricity Supply License,” today announced that SCI Pharmtech, a major active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) manufacturer, has officially joined its VPP.
By joining Enel X’s VPP, SCI Pharmtech will be able to convert its on-site backup power assets into grid dispatch resources, while maintaining the precision manufacturing processes and product quality standards critical to its operations. With approximately 1 MW of flexible capacity available around the clock, SCI Pharmtech will participate in Taipower’s Energy Trading Platform for “Spinning Reserve Ancillary Services,” from Q3 2026.
The partnership highlights how Enel X’s VPP platform can help high-precision manufacturers to simultaneously meet carbon reduction goals, achieve economic benefits, and strengthen operational resilience.
Wong Wei-Chyun, Chairperson of SCI Pharmtech stated: “SCI Pharmtech is a full-cycle API manufacturer serving international and high-end markets with precision process technology and consistent quality at the core of our operations. We supply high-quality, high-purity APIs to renowned pharmaceutical companies in Europe, the United States, Japan, and beyond, with over 90% of our revenue derived from exports. We have been implementing ESG management practices since 2003, and in 2025 established an energy management team to continuously drive energy efficiency assessments and improvements. Joining Enel X’s VPP is not only a step toward greater energy management efficiency, it marks a new milestone in our transition from passive energy conservation to actively creating energy value.”
“Given the high standards for power stability in pharmaceutical manufacturing, it was essential for us to ensure that VPP participation would have no impact on our production processes or product quality. Through site visits and technical exchanges arranged by Enel X with an existing customer using a similar energy management strategy, we were able to validate the safety and precision of the dispatch mechanism with confidence before moving forward.”
When a grid dispatch instruction is issued, Enel X’s VPP will use an automated control system to seamlessly transfer part of SCI Pharmtech’s grid load to on-site backup generation within five minutes, enabling up to one hour of grid support, without disrupting manufacturing operations.
The biopharmaceutical industry operates under some of the highest standards for power quality and operational reliability. Enel X is honored to partner with SCI Pharmtech, an industry hidden champion with a strong ESG vision. Enel X has a long track record of serving multiple companies among the world’s top ten pharmaceutical manufacturers, helping international pharma firms balance power supply stability, energy efficiency, and carbon reduction in highly regulated, zero-tolerance manufacturing environments. Its experience also spans many years across Taiwan’s semiconductor, electronics process, and healthcare sectors, where power reliability is equally critical.
By participating in a VPP, businesses can turn idle backup power into new revenue streams, that can be reinvested into renewable energy procurement and other sustainability initiatives. It creates a virtuous cycle of using energy revenue to fund carbon reduction, creating a practical pathway to strengthen competitiveness while advancing long-term decarbonization goals.
The partnership between Enel X and SCI Pharmtech demonstrates how Taiwan’s high energy-consuming, high-precision biotechnology and manufacturing sectors can unlock a triple win through VPPs: stronger operational resilience, progress towards carbon reduction targets, and new revenue, without compromising operational safety.
