How Samsung SDS Supports a Sustainable Grid with Enel X

A leading data center in Korea, Samsung SDS partnered with Enel X Korea to unlock new energy efficiencies, stabilize operations, and support grid stability.

Samsung SDS Suwon Center joined Enel X Korea’s Virtual Power Plant to enhance energy efficiency and contribute to Korea’s energy transition. Through a customized Demand Response participation plan, the data center maximized operational stability and revenue while supporting the local grid.

The client

Samsung SDS Suwon Center is a major data center located in Suwon, South Korea. As one of Korea’s leading digital infrastructure providers, it plays a critical role in IT operations, requiring reliable, high-volume electricity to ensure uninterrupted service. In response to rising sustainability standards and grid challenges, Samsung SDS sought to optimize its energy usage and contribute to national decarbonization efforts.

Benefits

Overview

As new energy regulations emerged, data centers like Samsung SDS began facing limitations on new infrastructure due to their high electricity demand. Despite past DR participation, Samsung SDS lacked clear insights on power monitoring, energy trading, and optimization strategies, making it harder to build confidence in operations and maximize the value of participation.
Enel X Korea provided Samsung SDS with tailored support, offering actionable insights into the electricity market and energy efficiency, real-time power monitoring tools, and advance notifications for DR dispatch events. In addition, a customized participation plan was developed to align with the operational characteristics of the data center.

This comprehensive approach enabled Samsung SDS to participate actively in the DR program with minimal disruption to its mission-critical operations, while also contributing to blackout prevention and enhancing grid stability in the region.
Through its participation in Enel X Korea’s DR program, Samsung SDS achieved a range of benefits. The initiative helped improve grid stability and prevent potential blackouts by enabling flexible energy usage during critical periods. Reliable participation in the program created a new revenue stream, while the optimized use of self-generated power enhanced overall operational efficiency. These efforts also led to a reduction in electricity costs. Furthermore, by supporting the integration of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind, Samsung SDS strengthened its commitment to long-term sustainability.
