Natural gas-powered vehicles: a network of filling stations is launched

Valdemoro is a fast-growing town which, thanks to its proximity to Madrid, now has a population of over 70,000. The local infrastructure in general and transport network in particular have been modernised to tackle the burgeoning demographic. And Enel Group’s Spanish subsidiary, Endesa, has been doing its bit by focusing on efficiency and sustainability with one of its new filling stations for natural gas-powered vehicles. Valdemoro was chosen for its strategic position due to the traffic of long-distance heavy vehicles.

A network takes shape

The new filling station, which opened in February 2016, is Endesa’s first in the Madrid region. The first ever such station was actually built at Palma de Majorca in 2015, and today there are 17 in total, 9 in Spain and 8 in France. A network is taking shape: our network.

The Valdemoro project was implemented in tandem with the local transport company, AISA, which decided to introduce 20 natural gas-powered buses (out of a total fleet of around 200) to connect Valdemoro with the nearby localities of Pinto and Ciempozuelos. These buses are set to become the main customers of the new filling station, which is located on public land.

The station is equipped with a deposit of liquefied natural gas measuring 60 cubic metres that supplies one GNL station and two compressed natural gas (CNG) stations in order to meet the needs of both types of customer: CNG can be used for all vehicles, but LNG is particularly well-suited for vehicles that travel longer distances as it triples their range.

The Valdemoro station has already enjoyed a moment of international celebrity. We played host to the drivers of the 11th LNG Blue Corridor Rally (which is reserved for natural gas-powered cars) at the end of the first stage. The race route winds its way for a massive 5,700 kilometres from Lisbon to St Petersburg, passing through nine countries in all.

Good for the environment – and the wallet!

The Valdemoro filling station is very much part of our smart solutions: natural gas is an alternative with both economic and environmental advantages. A natural gas-powered car will cover 59% more kilometres than a diesel for the same fuel spend and a massive 72% more than a petrol car. A natural gas-powered heavy-duty vehicle will likewise cover 36% more kilometres than a diesel-powered one, again for the same amount spent on fuel: this is a significant plus in particular for trucks and buses used for frequent and long-distance journeys.

Natural gas is the solution that helps to achieve sustainability and savings
