Enel X and Threefold Energy partner to maximise the value of commercial batteries

Enel X to provide market access and optimisation across Threefold Energy’s growing fleet of commercial batteries, delivering greater savings for customers and more support for the UK grid.

London, 21 September 2026: UK businesses stand to see greater savings from their on-site batteries, and the grid more support at peak, under a new partnership between Threefold Energy Group (“Threefold”) and Enel X – the energy flexibility division of Enel group. Under the agreement, Enel X will provide market access and optimisation across Threefold Energy’s Optima platform1 (“Optima”) and commercial battery portfolio, with Threefold participating in grid services that help meet the UK network’s need for greater optimisation.

Through the 5-year term of the agreement, Enel X will act as Threefold Energy’s exclusive capacity market access and optimisation provider for the sites covered by the agreement. The first phase of the contract is built around an estimated 3.5 megawatts (MW) of behind-the-meter (“BTM”) capacity, which the two companies aim to bring live within the first 12 months. The ambition is to scale participation across Threefold’s rapidly growing fleet, potentially unlocking 100MW or more2

Enel X will use its VPP Connect platform to optimise Threefold’s Optima managed batteries across the UK’s grid services landscape. The integration is fully virtual, meaning no additional hardware on client sites, and no disruption to how asset owners operate their businesses.

By joining Enel X’s virtual power plant (VPP), Threefold Energy’s batteries can be enrolled into a broad range of eligible grid and energy market services. Enel X’s VPP Connect platform ensures each asset is optimised to perform at its best at any given moment, so customers see greater optimisations and services are delivered where the grid needs them most.

Threefold Energy’s viewpoint

“Threefold is transforming UK commercial sites into intelligent, responsive energy assets. Our on-site technology automatically controls when electricity is drawn, stored, and used, reducing costs and changing how businesses interact with energy. The Enel X partnership lets us keep our customers in greater control of their energy costs, while our batteries deliver the load shifting the grid badly needs, particularly at the distribution level, where constraints are tightest and capacity is needed most. Behind-the-meter (“BTM”) batteries have always been about reducing bills and emissions on site – working with Enel X lets us modernise how we capture that value. As our portfolio scales, we look forward to scaling with Enel and leading the market in BTM commercial energy.” Luke Gamble, CEO.

Enel X’s viewpoint

“This deal allows us to help extend the reach of approved grid optimisation benefits to smaller, more distributed assets. The most exciting part is that VPP Connect layers directly onto Threefold Energy’s existing hardware and their Optima platform, meaning we can unlock greater value from an asset with no additional cost to the end user.”

Notes to editors

Optima is Threefold’s core operating system. It separates when businesses draw electricity from the grid from when they use it - automatically shifting demand to optimise tariffs, reduce non-commodity costs and carbon, and simplify energy reporting.
