Severn Trent unlocks £670k revenue while boosting resilience and sustainability with energy flexibility

Severn Trent Water, one of the UK’s largest water and wastewater utilities, partnered with Enel X to explore how demand-side response could deliver new revenue and operational benefits without disrupting critical infrastructure. Over three years, the collaboration has delivered more than £670,000 in Capacity Market revenue, helping to fund resilience upgrades, offset energy costs, and support the company’s ambitious sustainability targets.

The Challenge

Electricity accounts for around 10% of operating costs for UK water companies, with pumping being a major driver. Severn Trent wanted to find new ways to reduce OPEX, explore operational flexibility, and strengthen resilience - all while meeting strict service continuity requirements as a regulated operator of critical national infrastructure.

The Solution

Enel X worked closely with Severn Trent to identify suitable sites, conduct technical feasibility assessments, and enrol 5 MW of capacity across seven sites in the Capacity Market. By carefully aligning event windows with operational constraints, Severn Trent could participate without affecting core services.

Looking Ahead

Following the success of this long-term partnership, Severn Trent plans to expand participation to more of its ~7,000 sites, explore wholesale market opportunities, and increase automation to further streamline flexibility delivery.
