Ambev’s Beer Innovation Centre in Rio de Janeiro will be powered by 100% solar energy
The installation of over 2,000 solar panels at the BIC to generate clean energy was concluded at the start of the year; the project, developed in partnership with Enel X, marks another important step in the beer company’s quest to purchase 100% of electricity from renewable sources
February 2019 – From the second half of March, Ambev Brewing Company’s whole Beer Innovation Centre (BIC), located at the UFRJ Technological Park in Rio de Janeiro, will be fuelled by clean and renewable energy through a project carried out in partnership with Enel X, the Enel Group’s business line specialised in advanced energy solutions, including distributed solar generation. At the start of the year, the installation of over 2,000 solar panels on the location’s roof was completed. Together these panels can produce up to 720 kWp, enough to supply 100% of the unit’s operations during the times of day with greatest solar irradiance.
When the BIC’s energy consumption is lower than the capacity generated by the solar facility, excess energy will be made available to the distributor in charge of the energy supply in the region, which can lead to discounts on centre’s energy bill.
The project marks another important step in the beer company’s quest to purchase 100% of electricity from renewable sources, a target the firm aims to reach by 2025. At the end of last year, the company announced the construction of a solar plant at the Uberlândia brewery, which will open this year and will have the capacity to supply the operation of all the 13 distribution centres run in the state.
“This is another important landmark in the history we are developing with the environment. Together with other initiatives such as the construction of the solar plant in Minas Gerais and the use of electric trucks in our partner fleet, we are investing in alternatives that preserve our planet and build a sustainable future for the next generations,” says Rodrigo Figueiredo, Ambev Brewing Company’s Sustainability and Supplies vice-president.
“Brazil is expected to grow in the distributed generation market in the upcoming years and we want to play a key role in this sector, in line with our strategy to increase our presence in the market for innovative energy solutions in the country. Enel X’s worldwide expertise enables us to offer state-of-the-art services to companies while promoting distributed renewable generation, such as solar, bringing real and sustainable benefits to our customers and supporting the country’s economic development,” said Nestor Benito, Head of Enel X in Brazil.
Enel X has carried out the distributed solar generation project from the development stage to the installation of the over 2,000 panels, and it will also remotely monitor the system once fully operational. The installation of solar panels started in May 2018, following three months of planning and tests carried out at two pilot micro plants in Jacareí (SP). The PV project is expected to generate up to 958 MWh annually, reducing CO2 emissions by up to 131 tonnes a year. This beneficial environmental impact corresponds to the planting of 783 trees.
As well as the search for clean energy sources, Ambev has three other socio-environmental targets to be met by 2025, as announced last year by AB InBev. These include the exclusive use of packaging that is returnable or made from recycled materials, improvements in the availability of water for communities in areas of high hydric stress with which the company is engaged and, finally, training and support of partner farmers to develop an ever more sustainable agriculture.
