Primary Programs

Name: Capacity Market (Ireland/Northern Ireland)

Description:

What is the capacity market? A mechanism designed to ensure sufficient reliable capacity is available by providing payments to aggregators to secure future supplies of electricity.

Why do we need it? A mechanism designed to ensure sufficient reliable capacity is available by providing payments to aggregators to secure future supplies of electricity

Dispatches Number: Between 10 and 30 dispatch events per year

Season: Start of Capacity Year: 1st October

Notification Time: 1 hour notice

Name: Capacity Market (Great Britain)

Description:

What is the Capacity Market?

The Capacity Market as part of the Energy Act 2013 was put in place to ensure security of electricity supply. It offsets the risk of the reliance on unpredictable generation sources. By offering payments to generators such as CHPs, batteries, wind and solar and by providing valuable revenue for investors in any new generation plants. As well as incentivising demand-side via end users to make capacity available when it is needed most, through applicable backup generation and curtailment of equipment to reduce the load on the grid.

Dispatches Number: 4 to 6 including tests over the year

Season: 1st October to 30th September (with pre-qualification up to a year in advance)

Notification Time: 4 Hours Notice

Secondary Programs

Name: DS3

Description:

What is DS3? A program that responds to changes in frequency on the smallest scale. It is similar to the Capacity Market but quick response: it is the first line of defense, whereas the Capacity Market is last line of defense.

Why was it implemented? The DS3 Programme was created to meet the challenges of operating the electricity system in a secure manner while achieving renewable electricity targets.

Dispatches Number: 6 events per year for static customers, 107 events per year for dynamic customers

Season: Twice per year: October, April

Notification Time: Depends on the service. For example, Fast Frequency Response (FFR): MW delivered between 0.1 and 10 seconds. Tertiary Operating Reserve 2 (TOR2): MW delivered between 5 to 20 minutes.

Name: Frequency (FFR / DC)

Description:

What are Frequency Response Services?

National Grid monitors system frequency on a continuous basis. If demand is greater than generation, the frequency falls while if generation is greater than demand, the frequency rises. There are  number of frequency response services that National Grid require, 2 of these are:

  1. Dynamic frequency response is a continuously provided service used to manage the normal second by second changes on the system
  2. Non-dynamic response is usually a discrete service triggered at a defined frequency deviation.

Dispatches Number: Undefined number of event, mostly ranging seconds to 30 minutes.

Season: Ongoing, with a daily, weekly or monthly tenders.

Notification Time: None, automatically set

Tertiary Programs

Name: Balancing Mechanism (BM)

Description:

What is the Balancing Mechanism?

The Balancing Mechanism is key way for National Grid  to balance electricity supply and demand as close as possible to real time. When National Grid predicts that there will be a difference in the level of power produced to the expected demand in an half hour period. Where a difference is known they will accept a ‘bid’ or ‘offer’ (BoA) to either increase generation or reduce via lower generation or decrease consumption at the end user. Enel X will look to place 'bid' or 'offer' prices to decrease or increase consumption using client assets.

Dispatches Number: Undefined number of event, based on accepted BoA's ranging several hours a year to 1000+ hours.

Season: Ongoing

Notification Time: ~20 minutes
