When demand for electricity on the grid exceeds supply, utilities have two options to avoid a power disruption: increase supply to meet demand, or bring demand down to more manageable levels.

 

To avoid increasing supply, grid operators use demand response and operating reserves programs. These programs offer money to large electricity consumers to remove load from the grid temporarily.
