What is Negawatt Trading?

We give customers the opportunity to sell their "Negawatts" (kWh) into the Japanese Electric Power Wholesale Market, JEPX. This is also known as "Economic DR", which creates an additional revenue stream by responding when the system is facing a low reserve margin.

How does it work?

Evaluate eligibility

We consult with you to discuss your negawatt dispatch capabilities. This includes establishing your regular energy consumption level and which equipment can be powered down to reduce consumption at your facility.

Next we propose a simulation of the capacity available for your DR participation, remuneration, contract conditions and other operational considerations for when DR is activated.

Businesses who participate in the One-Dash Reserves Program can also participate in Negawatt Trading during the One-Dash shoulder season.

Bidding for and contracting the DR capacity, testing and validation

Enel X participates in the tender to participate in the market. Following a successful bid, we formulate a contract tailored to your business needs. We arrange the installation of equipment for DR participation and perform installation and activation tests to prepare you for the negawatt dispatch process.

VPP Participation

The JEPX is open 24x365, and you have complete flexibility to choose your participation date, time and bidding price (JPY/kWh) for negawatt trading at your convenience. As the aggregator, Enel X manages the bidding on the JEPX according to your choices. We usually bid your capacity in the day before the negawatt dispatch date. Your payments for participation are performance based, as stated in your contract.
