What is Emergency Capacity?

Since April 2016, Japan's general transmission and distribution operators (TSOs) have called for power reserves - called 'One-Dash' Reserves - from energy users. These help the grid cope with supply shortages, particularly during extreme heat and severe cold weather conditions. From FY2024, this power will be traded in a market called the Capacity Market. Customers participate in this market by becoming a demand response resource as part of our Virtual Power Plant (VPP). Businesses generate or share their reserve electricity by either starting up their own generators or powering down or adjusting their production facilities for a few hours.

How does it work?

Evaluate eligibility

We consult with you to discuss your DR dispatch capabilities. This includes establishing your regular energy consumption level and which equipment can be powered down to reduce consumption at your facility.

Next we propose a simulation of the capacity available for your DR participation, remuneration, contract conditions and other operational considerations for when DR is activated.

Bidding for and contracting the DR capacity, testing and validation

Enel X participates in the tender to participate in the market. Following a successful bid, we formulate a contract tailored to your business needs. We arrange the installation of equipment for DR participation and perform installation and activation tests.

VPP Participation

We notify you three hours in advance of the event, allowing you and your teams plenty of notice for the response period. You then follow the energy reduction plan and respond to the event, before safely returning to grid power. You receive regular payments for your participation.

Ongoing support

Our team provides ongoing support to ensure you are responding correctly, to support the grid and maximise your earnings.

The business opportunity

For businesses that can offer Demand Response, the program represents an opportunity to create a new source of revenue while supporting a cleaner and more competitive future.
