In Tenerife, the Campo San Sebastián cooperative produces its own energy from a 400-panel rooftop photovoltaic system designed specifically around the company’s needs

Enel X solutions enable an agricultural cooperative in the Canary Islands to move towards self-consumption

Environmental sustainability and energy efficiency are key objectives for today’s businesses. Respect for the land and care for the environment are absolute priorities, especially if the company in question is involved in agriculture.

In Los Olivos, in the south of the Canary Island of Tenerife, the 40 agricultural units that make up the Campo San Sebastián cooperative decided to turn to the experience of Enel X to change their energy consumption model and switch to clean renewable energy sources.

Through the Spanish company Endesa, our Group carried out a technical analysis of the consumption and energy habits of this agricultural cooperative located in the municipality of Adeje and involved mainly in the packaging of bananas. Enel X then developed a customised solution for the installation of a photovoltaic system for self-consumption. There are 400 polycrystalline panels, with a capacity of 98 kW, which now stand out on the roof of Campo San Sebastián. The solar installation was positioned following careful assessments of the surface, direction and inclination of the roof in order to maximise energy production and make this Spanish agricultural holding self-sufficient.

But that's not all. Thanks to the sustainable solution designed and built by Enel X, the atmosphere will be spared almost 3,000 tons of CO2 over the entire useful life of the installation. The new rooftop solar plant will allow the Tenerife cooperative to use electricity from the grid when solar energy is not available (e.g., at night), while also reducing its demand for electricity from the grid when its own photovoltaic production is not sufficient to cover the company’s energy needs. In the right weather conditions the photovoltaic installation will be able to produce enough energy to fully support the needs of Campo San Sebastián and will manage any surplus energy by feeding it into the grid.

In this way, the company will save more than 300 thousand euros over the plant’s 25-year life span without the need for any initial investment, as this was provided by our Group. In addition, we will provide for its maintenance and operational and administrative management for the duration of the contract.

The project implemented in Adeje by Enel X has been awarded the 2017 Sustainability and Energy Efficiency Award, which identified the Canary Island Cooperative as a business with a particularly strong sense of social responsibility.
