What is an energy storage system and why is it worth buying one?

An energy storage system – normally referred to as an accumulator or battery – is an electrochemical system that enables the storage of energy produced at certain times for subsequent use at a later moment and also optimises the use of the electrical energy, allowing self-production from renewable sources to be exploited as efficiently as possible, thus ensuring continuity if power from the grid is temporarily cut off.

The other important aspect is the battery’s ability to supply power with rapid response times, boosting the resilience of the electricity grid should unexpected external events occur.

There are various types of battery:

  • Lead-acid
  • Sodium-sulphur
  • Lithium-ion
  • Nickel-cadmium
