Electric mobility is smart mobility

Published on 21 March 2018

Electric mobility, the fight against environmental pollution, the new culture of energy efficiency and public transport policy are all fundamental issues, especially in this period of great technological and climactic transformations. What is the future scenario of mobility? Will the automobile sector rise to the challenges posed by the planet, challenges that many large multinationals are already addressing?

In order to take stock of these very issues, Federmotorizzazione organised the “General Assembly for Mobility” at the Confcommercio in Milan: a round table event attended by representatives from the industry, institutions and the political sphere, with speeches and discussion panels made up of experts and industry journalists.

Enel X’s Head of e-Mobility Alberto Piglia represented the company, first stressing that Italy still has work to do in order to reach the level of electric mobility development of some European countries, but explaining that the gap can be reduced quickly if every actor in the mobility ecosystem plays their part. In fact, the Group aims to install 14,000 charging stations across the country by 2022.

e-cars, renewable sources, smart grids and batteries for energy storage

The new energy ecosystem has only one access key, and it is called digital intelligence. As for vehicles powered exclusively by electricity, according to the International Energy Agency, the global growth scenarios for electric vehicles are encouraging. Just think of the ban on diesel or petrol cars by 2040 introduced by Britain, France and Germany and the 4 billion euros the Italian government allocated for the replacement of polluting buses last year.

Undoubtedly, in order to spread the culture of electric mobility and motivate drivers to purchase electric cars, the market needs to come up with reasonable offers, especially to eliminate the established belief that ecological cars are expensive cars. In his speech, Piglia explained that the reduction in the cost of car batteries, which are genuine energy reserves thanks to the Vehicle-to-Grid revolution, will significantly contribute to a reduction in the cost of e-cars. Today, models such as the Nissan Leaf, developed in partnership with our Group, can offer enough autonomy to cover 95% of average daily travel. Piglia pointed out that such partnerships are decisive in facilitating the growth of the electric-powered automobile sector, explaining how car manufacturers will increasingly invest in the production of electric models. The distribution of a network of infrastructures throughout the national and international territory is also fundamental: Enel is already working on this with the EVA+ and E-VIA FLEX-E projects.

Alberto Piglia outlined the company’s vision as a first mover in Italy when it comes to e-Mobility, having identified in this sector an opportunity for industrial development for the whole country.

Pioneering the route ahead for the new generation of eco-friendly drivers, Enel X offers all-inclusive packages with domestic wall-boxes for recharging and integrated purchasing offers in partnership with the manufacturers. The company is also committed to boosting the number of e-cars in corporate fleets and with taxi companies, in addition to interacting with institutions to introduce urban bus routes operated by e-buses.

Being electric does not just mean being sustainable, but being smart.
