A new kind of driving pleasure
The new full-electric BMW i3 with a 94 Ah high-voltage lithium ion battery is the world’s first series-production model to have a carbon passenger compartment and to be designed for maximum across-the-board sustainability: from design to production to day-to-day use. As an electric car, it is the perfect companion around town as it generates zero emissions. But the new BMW i3 is not just a green car. Its agility and powerful acceleration (it sprints from 0-100 km/h in just 7.3 seconds) ensure it delivers exceptional driving pleasure for its segment.

Functional spaciousness: the BMW i3 welcomes passengers into a cabin in which everything feels clear and well-connected. Every single element has a very precise aim and every detail a specific function. The BMW i3’s unique LifeDrive architecture creates an all-new in-car ambience that feels innovative and futuristic. There is no centre tunnel between the driver and front passenger, nor is there a B-pillar between the opposing doors. The cabin is completely available to occupants and feels instantly large and spacious. There are also sustainable touches everywhere. A large proportion of the materials used comes from renewable or recycled sources. The look is elegant and spacious, creating a loft-style atmosphere that really takes the sustainability concept to a whole new level.
The upper Life module is essentially the passenger cell or compartment and a very roomy one at that. Made from tough carbon-fibre, it has an expansive loft-like feel and is also exceptionally safe. That said, the overall DIN-weight of the BMW i3 (94 Ah) has been slashed to 1,245 kg, to guarantee a sportier drive and a longer range.
The most natural form of pleasure is spontaneous pleasure. And the all-electric BMW eDrive system, which drives the rear wheels of the car in signature BMW style, is absolutely spontaneous. Just tip the accelerator pedal as soon as you have turned on the BMW i3 to unleash maximum torque and pull away in silence. The same pedal also lets you brake – just take your foot off. This is because the BMW i3 is recovering the kinetic energy available and using it to charge the battery. The “one pedal feeling,” as we call this innovative technology, not only delivers an absolutely new driving experience but also extends the car’s driving range.
The Drive module or vehicle platform is made from lightweight aluminium and houses all the components required to power the car. The rear section contains the electric motor, the gearbox and the Range Extender (optional).
The high-voltage battery sits in a sturdy housing integrated safely into the underfloor section. This is the best way of guaranteeing optimal protection in all circumstances. Another advantage from positioning the battery there is that it lowers the centre of gravity, ensuring that the rear-wheel-drive BMW i3’s agility is unparalleled. The battery itself comes with an 8-year or 100,000 km warranty.
