Sustainability, efficiency, digitalisation and flexibility: these are the four key words to understand the transformation taking place in the energy sector. It is a revolution that is driven by the fight against climate change and one that is shifting traditional paradigms. Electricity is the most efficient, sustainable and competitive form of energy for tackling some of the toughest challenges of our time: the decarbonisation of the economy, the reduction of pollution in our cities, improving energy efficiency in transport and buildings, as well as the digitalisation of the networks.
By 2050 the global demand for electricity will have increased by 62%, and investment in digitalization in the sector is set to grow by 40% between now and 2025.
Furthermore, in 2050 the productive capacity providing flexibility services to the system will make up around 15% of the total energy mix (source: Bloomberg New Energy Finance).
Renewable sources, the empowerment of the consumer and the new digital platforms are invaluable allies in the mission to achieve decarbonisation. What’s more, businesses are the key players in this revolution. The energy transition is reshaping utilities’ traditional business models; innovation and digital solutions offer an opportunity to manage this complex situation. Enel X’s mission is to help clients transform energy into new opportunities, offering personalised, bespoke energy consulting to optimise consumption and generate value for its clients. Moreover, Enel X platforms enable clients to understand their own energy consumption.
Enel X’s global product line e-Industries offers commercial and industrial clients a vast range of services. In addition to flexibility, distributed generation and off-grid solutions, the options also include energy consulting and energy optimisation services that provide clients with innovative digital tools. These solutions include: the Utility Bill Management (UBM) Platform that enables clients to centralise, analyse, process and verify all their clients’ utility bills (energy, water, gas, waste, etc.); Energy Consulting services to define a strategic sustainable pathway, identify new opportunities and manage operational risks; the new Energy Management System (EMS) platform which monitors energy consumption in real time; and finally, Energy Efficiency solutions such as the remote control.
UBM is a comprehensive service for managing all utility use. Consumption trends are monitored by Enel X through a software solution which comes with a user-friendly interface accessible from any type of device. In addition to efficient centralised bill management, the platform provides a multitude of different functionalities, including summaries of consumption at each of the client’s sites. Enel X receives the bills directly from the suppliers of electricity, water, gas and waste collection. It then verifies their accuracy and carries out checks to identify any errors, before submitting the payment to the suppliers. Once the invoice is received, it is processed through a meticulous audit that verifies every piece of information. The bills that do not pass this validation process are verified and rectified directly with the supplier on behalf of the client. The data from those bills that the system recognises as correct, however, is registered on the UBM platform that processes the file for payment.
Furthermore, some locations are already equipped with the so-called Bill Pay service through which Enel X directly pays the invoice on behalf of the client. Thanks to UBM, Enel X is capable of centralising, processing and verifying all utility bills for the client, eliminating the manual process involving thousands of invoices each year in every country.
The added value of the platform has marked benefits in terms of management and administration. UBM generates benchmark analyses and reports comparing costs at each site, both for internal and external use. This solution provides greater visibility and transparency concerning the client’s use of utilities and identifies opportunities for energy cost reduction. The software also includes a meticulously ‘green’ approach, underpinned by analytical tools and reports based on all the sustainability indicators and targets. In short, UBM ensures better operational planning and enables clients to achieve optimal conditions in terms of efficiency. It also identifies any consumption anomalies and pinpoints opportunities for the improvement of the energy performance of the clients’ premises.
To date, the platform is available in 104 countries and manages annual spending of 5.5 billion dollars for around 90 thousand supply points, processing 1.4 million bills each year.
Enel X, thanks to Energy Consulting, helps clients to analyse and manage the five fundamental aspects of their energy costs:
For each of these aspects, Enel X provides tailored support using the Energy Exchange platform to process the vast quantity of data collected and aggregated on other Enel X digital platforms (UBM and EMS).
In particular, the services offered include:
To date, Enel X has supported more than 200 clients, assisting them in more than 3 thousand different sites spread across 19 nations and guiding them towards conscious and sustainable energy use.
EMS (Energy Management System) is a software product that gathers consumption data from all of the client’s equipment, processing it to produce benchmark analyses and identify actions to optimise energy use. EMS offers constant real-time monitoring of multiple sites, generating in-depth reports on the problems encountered and the underlying causes, as well as any examples of inefficient consumption. The platform sends notifications in real time in the form of email or text messages when it discovers consumption data that is higher or lower than a predefined threshold. The software is capable of automatically identifying and suggesting corrective actions to optimise consumption and the related energy costs.
Enel X also offers remote management solutions for devices such as heat pumps. The remote control of air conditioning systems is a typical example of how commercial and industrial clients can benefit from Enel X’s expertise in taking full advantage of digital assets. Through its remote control solutions Enel X’ is capable of getting more out of clients’ assets, ensuring savings and reducing operational management requirements.
For its clients, Enel X is a partner and reference point for all aspects of energy use. Thanks to the use of digital software and platforms, Enel X offers an extensive portfolio of services for managing all aspects of clients’ energy consumption, driving the shift towards sustainable and circular solutions that promote the use of renewable energies and reduce CO2 emissions.
