The advantages of driving an electric vehicle are both financial and practical. Depending on the municipality of residence, there are reserved parking spaces, options for free parking in the metered areas (the blue stripes) and free access to restricted traffic areas.
The maintenance costs of an EV are lower than those of a traditional internal combustion car. Unlike a traditional engine, an electric motor does not have moving parts that are consumed with use nor liquids that require replacing and is therefore cheaper and simpler to maintain. Thanks to the systems of energy recovery in the deceleration phase, even wear on the brake pads is reduced. Furthermore, seeing as the battery life is equal to that of the car, it does not require maintenance.
Range remains one of the main stumbling blocks in purchasing electric vehicles. However, some scientific studies have revealed that 95% of trips do not exceed 200 km (according to the NHTS, the National Household Travel Survey). These mileages can easily be covered in the electric cars currently available on the market.
In terms of environmental impact, today electric cars outperform all other available alternatives in terms of CO2 and polluting emissions as they are the only vehicles with technology that completely eliminates local nitric oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) emissions as you drive (Data source: Enel processing of RSE, European Environment Agency, Joint Research Center, Ispra and Deloitte data).
The choice of the car is important, so remember to pay particular attention to the following aspects:
Type of vehicle: is it BEV or PHEV? A "Battery Electric Vehicle" (BEV) car has an electric motor and runs solely on electricity. The "Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle" (PHEV) car has both an electric and a gasoline engine, which means the vehicle can be charged and also runs on traditional fuels;
Check the capacity of the car battery;
Check its range (in Km);
Check the maximum power of the battery charger cable supplied with the vehicle.
You can buy the car at a dealer or choose a long-term rental formula from a rental company.
