Enel X is a leading provider of charging solutions in electric motorsports, and is the official charging supplier for several high-profile events, including most recently, for “Pure” ETCR, Electric Touring Car Racing. This is the world’s first ever multi-brand electric touring car championship, and is due to become operative in 2021.
The series is organised by WCT whose president, Marcello Lotti, founded the more “traditional” (i.e. non-electric) TCR (Touring Car Racing) in 2014. A series of test ETCR races will take place later this year, starting at the end of September, with another showcase race billed for Daytona in January. The 2021 season should see eight races: four in Europe and four in Asia and the Americas. So far three manufacturers have signed up, namely, SEAT (with its Cupra sporting brand), Hyundai and Alfa Romeo. Lotti says that two others have already committed, but they are still subject to non-disclosure agreements.
As charging partner, Enel X’s role will consist of providing two types of fast charging station that have been specifically developed for the championship: one single 60 kW connector and a double connector consisting of two 60 kW outputs. This is capable of delivering 120 kW when only one output is engaged. The chargers are integrated in customised wheelboxes and are completely movable. Not only that, they can fully recharge an ETCR vehicle in less than one hour.
It addition to offering Enel X brand visibility, this partnership also has considerable technical benefits. As Enel X’s Head, Francesco Venturini, points out, the new solutions that are developed and tested in the partnership with ETCR “can then be replicated on the street for everyday use, with a view to boosting technological innovation in electric mobility and improving the overall electric vehicle experience.”
