Primary Programs

Name: Critical Peaking Program - NSW*

Description: Our Virtual Power Plant (VPP) provides critical peaking services to protect the grid during supply shortages year-round. Events occur year round, particularly on hot summer afternoons when demand is very high, during winter when there’s not enough supply to meet demand, or when large power stations or parts of the transmission network, including interconnectors between states are experiencing outages. In today’s volatile electricity market, power prices can spike to $15,100 / MWh. To put downward pressure on pricing, we operate our VPP capacity during extreme spikes - which often indicates a supply shortfall - and are paid for it. Participating businesses can support the grid and earn a recurring new revenue stream. Earnings are calculated based on performance.

Dispatches Number: 10-20 per year

Name: IRCR - WA*

Description: Capacity charges make up ~1/4 of Western Australian business’ electricity bills. The annual charge is based on the previous year’s energy consumption during system peak demand intervals. Enel X helps you save on capacity charges by predicting when these intervals may occur, so you can reduce energy consumption at these times. Businesses either power down or switch to a backup power source, with little to no impact on operations. We currently work with 70 sites in Western Australia, and help them save up to hundreds of thousands of dollars on their energy bills each year.

Secondary Programs

Name: Frequency Control Ancillary Services Program*

Description: Power plants and transmission network lines suddenly fail from time to time. When they do, it impacts the grid’s frequency, and the system needs resources that can respond quickly to prevent cascading power failures. Participating businesses support the grid and the uptake of renewables by providing an instantaneous response to balance electricity supply with demand via our VPP. Provide additional capacity to the grid by instantly reducing onsite power usage or switching to a backup power source for up to 10 minutes.
